Ushio to ship samples of 670nm-690nm band single-mode 200mW laser diodes developed for life science, biomedical and quantum technology field solutions

Ushio Inc. has announced that samples of their latest high-efficiency, compact 200mW high-power single-mode laser diodes are now available to order for testing from The Optoelectronics Company Ltd. With wavelengths of 675nm and 690nm, these new diodes have been developed as a red-light source that can be used in a wide range of applications such as research and development in the life science, biomedical and quantum fields.

Ushio is committed to the development and mass production of high-power single-mode red laser diodes which have a wide range of lasing wavelengths from 630nm to 690nm. Previously, in 2018, they released the HL63392DG series of laser diodes with an optical output power of 200mW at a wavelength of 639nm for levellers, rangefinders and medical applications and in 2020 they released the HL65221DG series with an optical output power of 200mW at a wavelength of 660nm for sensors and biomedical applications. Now they have started to commercialise high power single-mode laser diodes at 675nm and 690nm to meet the strong market demands for long wavelength applications.

670nm band applications

Laser diodes with wavelengths in the 670nm band have a wide range of applications including in life science fields such as Raman spectroscopy and confocal microscopy, medical fields such as acne and blemish treatment as well as applications in quantum technology fields such as atomic laser cooling and quantum computers where research and development has been active in recent years.

690nm band applications

Laser diodes with wavelengths in the 690nm band are being developed and put to practical use in research and development in the quantum technology field represented by optical lattice clocks and in the medical fields of photodynamic therapy (PDT), photobiomodulation and photoimmunotherapy for cancer.

DPSS laser modules

Existing laser module products such as DPSS lasers that have already been commercialised for these applications are inevitably larger, more complex and more expensive due to their structure. In addition, compared to semiconductor laser diodes, their luminous efficiency is lower, which has been a barrier to their widespread adoption.

 

In order to address these issues, Ushio has expanded the lasing wavelength range to the long wavelength band by applying the high power, high efficiency and high reliability technologies cultivated through the development of 640nm and 660nm band products. Furthermore, by adopting a 5.6mm package, we have been able to achieve a smaller, lighter and lower cost product compared to current laser module products. This will enable a wider range of use in relevant applications. With the shipment of these samples, Ushio will further expand its line-up of red laser diodes and contribute to the spread and improvement of the performance of red laser diode equipped devices in a wider range of fields.
